Ok, raise your hands if you don’t believe I can do it!! 🙂 I’m a shopaholic,to the point of psychosis, so giving up my fav thing in the world for the next 3 months (the ultimate goal is 6,but let’s start with baby steps!) is a pretty hard thing to do! But I have decided to give this capsule wardrobe thing a go!
I have been planning since January my capsule wardrobe, donating few things every week and cross checking all items I want to keep. It has been a very emotional journey as more than half of my closet has somehow been gone. But let’s take things from the beginning:
What is a capsule wardrobe?
For those hearing it for the first time, a capsule wardrobe is a wardrobe of approximately 35 items in total – and for the Jedi masters around 20 items- which you wear for an entire season! This includes shoes too but of course jewelry don’t count!
To be fair, most women,no matter the size of their closet, tend to wear the same clothes over and over again. So this shouldn’t be so hard, right?
The trick is to remove all extra items from your closet and create a more “relaxed” way of putting outfits together.
All these sound great but there is of course a catch: once you decide on your capsule wardrobe of a season you can’t shop until next season!! So in my case, I have come up with my capsule wardrobe for Spring and this means I’ll be able to shop again in June! 😱😱
But I’ve made my mind so I’m gonna try it! The first thing I did was to chose clothes from my closet that are brand new. Some of them are up to two years old but since I kept buying more I never got to wear them. So I made them now key pieces for my capsule. To be honest, I only spent 120€ for the entire wardrobe as I bought 4 items! The rest were already in my closet – including the two Ralph Lauren pairs of shoes that were still in the boxes! 😳😳
For my capsule I have chosen …
3 pairs of trousers (mainly for work but I’ll try to incorporate them in my weekend looks too)
15 tops, blouses and shirts: of course the simple one colored tee that goes with everything, casual but colorful tops and some more sophisticated shirts for the office.
3 Blazers jackets: the classic black(Not just good for the office but also great with casual wear), a light pink one (totally a spring classic) and a long oversized blazer in blue ( cause a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean not following the trends!!).
4 cardigans: It’s still chilly out there but it’s also a nice way to create a look! I kept two long sleeved for now,as it’s still cold, and two with no sleeves for April and May when it’s gonna get warmer!
One dress and one long skirt: it is still chilly so I won’t be wearing dresses all the time. But I wanted to have the option of a more girly look for the warmer days!
5 pairs of shoes: I know they sound few but I preferred to have more clothes than shoes, as I end up wearing the same shoes anyway no matter how many I buy!
For the next month I’m gonna be wearing my winter coat( and only that!!) but in April im gonna be using 3 pieces of outwear: a short trench coat, a light parka and a faux leather.Obviously my winter coat is not gonna stay in my capsule wardrobe,as I can’t have them all!
My one trick to avoid panic attacks, and of course the impulse to shop,is to keep few tops hidden in my drawer for a rainy day! So, although I will be wearing only my capsule pieces,if I get super grumpy over this I will pick one top from the drawer and wear it just once, to convince myself it’s something new! I know it sounds silly, but even the idea is very comforting! Of course this doesn’t mean I get to do that every week, but once ore twice in the entire season! Hopefully I won’t have to do it at all if all goes well.
What I’m mostly excited about is the fact that I’ll have to be more creative and work with what I’ve got. I would have to accessorize more,do my hair more often and try combinations I wouldn’t normally try!
So I’m gonna need your support on that guys and of course your thoughts and ideas on the capsule wardrobe!!
